Switching to a more energy-efficient pool pump can save you big

Did you know that inefficient, single-speed pool pumps account for up to 20% of a home’s total annual energy usage?* Only your central air conditioner uses more electricity in the summertime. Cut your pool energy use in half by installing a variable-speed pool pump. With the Smart $aver® Energy Efficiency Program, the benefits add up.

Reduce pool energy use by up to 60%

Why are variable-speed pool pumps so efficient? Variable-speed pool pumps work at the minimum speed necessary to clean your pool. This means they use less energy, make less noise, last longer and actually filter your water more thoroughly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the estimated savings?

According to ENERGY STAR, certified variable-speed pool pumps can save the average household up to $450 per year on electric bills compared to a standard single-speed pump. Larger pools with larger pool pump motors will save even more. Depending upon the number of months you operate your swimming pool, your savings could be even greater.

How about maintenance?

Regular annual maintenance is still recommended. However, because variable-speed pool pumps use totally enclosed, fan-cooled motors, they are not as susceptible to dirt and moisture. Please review the manufacturer's operating and installation instructions, or ask your participating contractor for maintenance instructions.

How will I receive my rebate?

Via prepaid Mastercard. You have the option to receive a physical card in the mail or you can get it faster through a digital Mastercard that can be added to your virtual wallet on your iPhone or Android device.

How do I submit a rebate application?

After the participating contractor completes the work, he or she will submit the rebate application, along with any required documentation. Once we receive and approve the application, you will receive the rebate within 4-6 weeks. Alternately, if you chose to purchase a qualifying pool pump from a participating retailer you can submit your rebate application online by visiting www.smartsaverincentives.com.

Do all variable-speed pool pumps qualify?

ENERGY STAR certifies both multi-speed and variable-speed residential in-ground pool pumps ranging in size from ½ horsepower up to 4 horsepower. An ENERGY STAR certified pool pump can run at different speeds and be programmed to match the pool operation with its appropriate pool pump speed. The energy saved is considerable; reducing pump speed by one-half allows the pump to use just one-eighth as much energy. In addition, ENERGY STAR certified pool pumps can use more efficient motors and advanced hydraulic designs. To qualify for Duke Energy Progress’ rebate, your new pool pump must be classified as variable-speed and meet the ENERGY STAR specifications. Multi-speed and single-speed pool pumps do not qualify for Duke Energy Progress’ rebate.

How do I know if I’m eligible for the rebate?

To be eligible, you must be a residential Duke Energy Progress electric service customer living in a single-family residence with a new or existing in-ground swimming pool. Variable speed pump must be for main water filtration of pool.

What is a Smart saver participating contractor?

Each participating contractor is a qualified professional who has met Duke Energy Progress’ strict license and insurance requirements. These participating contractors are approved to perform work eligible for Duke Energy Progress Smart $aver rebates. After the participating contractor completes the work, he or she will submit the rebate application on your behalf.
